What is High frequency heat treatment?
The heat source of high frequency induction heating process enhances the wear resistance (antiabrasion) properties and mechanical behaviors of metal components through surface hardening by heating or cooling the metal component. There are two types of method for surface hardening; chemical and physical.These two methods are similar in the sense that both are surface hardening but as for the chemical surface hardening such as carburizing or nitriding, the chemical substances on the surface change and they become different from the parent body. Consequently the wear resistance and fatigue resistance are improved.On the other hand, with physical surface hardening such as high frequency hardening, the surface changes from austenitic microstructure to martensitic microstructure. Therefore, the wear resistance as well as fatigue resistance becomes more effective.
Methods of the high frequency heat treatment
The wear resistance improves through tempering after making quench hardened layers on the surface layer by cooling momentarily either by air cooling or water cooling based on heating of the surface of heated objects to the quenching temperature (deviation is wide depending on substances of heated objects) using the method of high frequency induction heating. Hardness depth depend on according to the frequency and length of heat temperature.
